Thu, April 24, 1:45 to 3:15pm MDT (1:45 to 3:15pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 4

Abstract

This research investigates the hyperlocal migratory patterns of Chicago-area 18-24-year-olds to explore the connections between STEM interest, demographic identities, and future STEM career pathways. Existing literature usually examines migration at broader geographic scales, such as between continents, countries, and states. This study focuses on migration within a metropolitan area, examining its impact on the choices of young adults. Utilizing narratives and datasets from participants aged 18-24 in the STEAMbassadors out-of-school workforce development initiative, the research aims to understand these hyperlocal migration patterns and how this influences their identities and career choices. Findings will inform the design of programs aiming to create a workforce reflective of the community it serves, enhancing inclusivity and representation.
