From Bias to Bridge-Building: Transforming Chinese University Students' Stereotypes of African Americans Through Educational Intervention

Thu, April 24, 5:25 to 6:55pm MDT (5:25 to 6:55pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Bluebird Ballroom Room 2E

Abstract

This study examines racial stereotypes among Chinese university students towards African Americans comparing with other racial groups. Initial surveys revealed stereotypical perceptions of African Americans as more athletic, enthusiastic but poorer, more closeminded, less intelligent, less beautiful comparing to White Americans. We implemented a semester-long African American studies course as an intervention. Using Propensity Score Matching Difference-in-Differences (PSM-DID) analysis, we evaluated the intervention's impact through pre- and post-intervention surveys. Results show significant correction of negative stereotypes towards African Americans compared to other groups. This research contributes to understanding cross-cultural perceptions and demonstrates the effectiveness of targeted educational interventions in mitigating racial biases.
