What Happens When the YPAR (Youth Participatory Action Research) Project Is Over? The Enduring Influence of YPAR

Abstract

Given that YPAR aims to develop a life-long commitment to civic engagement, the authors of this study aim to understand how engaging with YPAR in high school shapes students’ mindsets and college and career choices after their projects are complete and they have graduated from high school. We offer insights on the connections students see between their YPAR participation and their current college and/or career trajectories? Drawing on reflections from former YPAR participants, we share findings on the ways school-based YPAR informs students’ mindsets and college and career choices one or more years after completing their YPAR projects. This work contributes to existing conversations on the value of YPAR in school-based contexts.
