Abstract

Socio-emotional learning (SEL) skills could lead to positive behavioral outcomes for at-risk youth. In this study, we developed and piloted an eight-week SEL intervention program based on CASEL framework and growth mindset in two cities in the Philippines. Fifty one children-in-conflict-with-the-law completed pre- and post-test measures on SEL skills, while 17 psychometricians, teachers and house-parents completed behavioral checklists. Interviews were also conducted to facilitators (to gain insights on implementation) and participants (to learn about their impression of the program). Quantitative results showed that participants’ self-awareness, self-management and decision-making skills improved significantly after the program. This is supported by behavioral observations and interviews with participants and facilitators. Recommendations for future implementation and sustainability are included.
