Learning how to teach early reading is a vital part of becoming a new teacher and a complex endeavor that requires developing knowledge of the concepts as well as the pedagogy and classroom application. Simultaneously, teachers must also have support to develop humanizing stances and practices in relation to their students. However, little is understood about the ways that pre-service teachers (PSTs) learning to teach foundational reading skills also demonstrate elements of humanizing pedagogies. This exploratory study of 18 pre-service teachers in an reading methods course examines the ways that they demonstrated humanizing pedagogies in early reading teaching settings with first grade students.
