Libros Acompañantes as an Essential Action of Critical Bilingual Literacies and Critical Consciousness in Dual Language Bilingual Education

Abstract

This paper brings together critical bilingual literacies, critical consciousness in dual language bilingual education (DLBE), and acompañamiento in our work as critical bilingual teacher educators working with future bilingual teachers in Texas and California. Specifically, we conceptualize and document how we integrate libros acompañantes: children’s literature that accompanies the identities, realities, and experiences of Latinx emergent bilinguals and is an essential action in creating espacios in DLBE that nurture the development of critical consciousness, which we argue should be the foundation and not just a fourth goal of DLBE.
