Sun, April 27, 8:00 to 9:30am MDT (8:00 to 9:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 2-3

Abstract

This qualitative case study explores how culturally diverse student leaders communicate to collaborate across differences for campus advocacy efforts. Through interviews, observations, and document analysis, the study identifies three primary communication strategies: authentic, relatable, and empathetic communication. These strategies play a crucial role in building intercultural understanding and relationships among student leaders, which, in turn, facilitate successful advocacy collaboration driving institutional change. The study provides in-depth descriptions of each communication strategy and how it facilitates understanding, relationship, and collaboration, giving insight into complicated processes of intercultural communication. Highlighting the importance of intercultural communication and collaboration building collective power to steer systemic change, this paper offers practical insights for student and institutional leaders aiming to create more collaborative and equitable campuses.
