Exploring the “Doing” of DEI: Facilitators and Impediments in Three NSF-ATE Projects

Wed, April 23, 9:00 to 10:30am MDT (9:00 to 10:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 704

Abstract

This study addresses gaps in evaluating Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) within NSF-funded Advanced Technological Education projects. Based on feedback from the ATE community, we adopted a participatory action research methodology with three ATE projects to identify barriers and solutions for DEI implementation. Using the DATA-DATA model for action research, we guided teams in addressing DEI challenges. Findings revealed issues like incomplete data, mixed understanding of DEI within the teams, and lack of DEI related goals and success metrics in project plans. Additionally, the impact of organizational and individual commitments on how DEI shows up in projects was evident. This research provides an in-depth insight into DEI barriers and facilitators, aligning with AERA 2025's theme of Research, Remedy, and Repair.
