Abstract

Mentoring programs have been shown to significantly contribute to the academic success of Black girls and women. The purpose of this research study is to build from previous research and frameworks on mentoring, positive youth development, and black identity development and create and evaluate a culturally responsive mentoring program/framework made by and for Black girls and women. The results from this study provide continuous evidence for the impact of mentoring on Black girls and college women, noting the potential for positive youth development, better college student engagement and better adjustment. Results also provide insights into the changing landscape of mentoring and the impact of social media and Hip Hop culture as alternative mentoring spaces.
