Rebuilding Indigenous Community Research Partnerships Through Healing Methodologies and Technology Practices

Thu, April 24, 8:00 to 9:30am MDT (8:00 to 9:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 2-3

Abstract

Relationships between researchers, institutions, and Indigenous communities face challenges when integrating technology in their infrastructural implementations without compromising cultural, technological, and rhetorical sovereignty. Therefore, we introduce healing practices of technology, which are empirical insights, strategies, and methods drawn from decades of our collective experiences engaging in community-driven design research across Indigenous communities. Through a critical ethnographic approach, we unpack the question: What research methodologies and practices around technology can rebuild partnerships between institutions and Indigenous communities? By reflecting on technology in the context of community research partnerships, we acknowledge Indigenous people's sovereignty and self-determination, heal from harmful systemic research practices, and rebuild relationships among multiple rich ways of knowing and being.
