Unveiling Segregation: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis of Black Women's Experiences in New York Public Schools

Thu, April 24, 3:35 to 5:05pm MDT (3:35 to 5:05pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 1

Abstract

New York is the most segregated state in the nation for black students and second in the nation for Latinx students behind California (Cohen, 2021; Kuscera and Orfield, 2014). Furthermore, schools in New York City once led the nation in screened admissions into selective middle and high schools (Hemphill,et al., 2019). In May of 2024, an anti-segregation lawsuit was filed against New York State and City for these racial policies and structures. Using an interpretive phenomenological analysis case study, this paper seeks to understand the impact of these racially and economically segregated public schools in New York State on the educational experiences and outcomes of black students.
