Discourses of Women’s Gender in Society and in Graduate Mathematics: PhD Students’ Perspectives

Sat, April 26, 1:30 to 3:00pm MDT (1:30 to 3:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 1

Abstract

This study explores the discourses created by six women Ph.D. students in mathematics, focusing on their perceptions of gender in both the context of U.S. society and mathematics. While the research highlights persistent historical beliefs about gender roles, it also reveals a shift in women’s perceptions, with some feeling that their gender does not hinder their experiences in mathematics. Despite these positive shifts, many women still perceive mathematics as isolating and inequitable. The findings emphasize the need for continued exploration of women’s experiences in graduate mathematics, acknowledging the intersectionality of gender with other identities. This research aims to contribute to the discourse on gender equity in STEM fields and foster a more inclusive environment for women in mathematics.
