This study analyzes the perceptions of STEM majors (n=509) enrolled in Ethnic Studies and Feminist Studies courses at a Research 1 University. The data was gathered by surveying 1146 students in introductory Ethnic Studies (Asian American Studies, Black Studies, and Chicana/o Studies) and Feminist Studies courses. Participants who identified as STEM majors were included in the analysis. The study found four themes connected to Ethnic and Feminist Studies exposure: emotional intelligence, critical thinking, social and cultural understanding, and problem solving. The outcomes of this research suggest that Ethnic and Feminist Studies courses may serve as a gateway for STEM majors to develop a strong foundation in social-cultural awareness and addressing social problems in their studies and future professions.
