How Generative Artificial Intelligence Affects Student Collaboration: A Network Analysis of Higher Education Assignments

Sat, April 26, 1:30 to 3:00pm MDT (1:30 to 3:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 709

Abstract

The integration of Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) in education is advancing, offering new options for collaborative learning. To optimize AI integration in education, it's essential to investigate diverse interaction forms and identify best practices. To understand the collaborative patterns and impact of Gen AI on assignment completion, this study analyzed the collaboration modes of 23 graduate students. Through k-modes clustering, three distinct collaboration profiles were identified: Human-AI Collaborators, Peer Collaborators with AI Assistance, and Individual Learners. Social Network Analysis and ANOVA results reveal that Human-AI Collaborators exhibit higher connectivity and engagement in their networks and superior academic performance. These findings highlight the potential of Gen AI to enhance learning outcomes and foster interaction in educational environments.
