Art and Sustainability: Preserving Our Island Home

Abstract

This project focuses on art to increase awareness and advocacy in environmental and cultural sustainability among K-12 students in the Guam Department of Education. The Isla Center for the Arts at the University of Guam sponsors an annual Art-a-thon to promote the arts among local students. The theme for the AY 2023-24 25th Annual Art-a-thon emphasized the preservation of the environment and culture in Guam and partnered with Guam Green Growth (G3) Makerspace and Innovation Hub to design and create sustainable frames for the exhibition. The paper discusses the inspiration behind this first University of Guam Fine Arts program STEAM project, the design and execution of the Art-a-thon, and results and conclusions of the project.
