What Does This STEM From? Queer and Trans Voices in the Decision to Leave STEM Programs and Careers

Thu, April 24, 3:35 to 5:05pm MDT (3:35 to 5:05pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 2-3

Abstract

Despite a growing workforce, talented LGBT+ individuals are likely to leave STEM programs before degree completion and STEM careers after experiencing the workforce. LGBT+ individuals may leave due to issues with safety, harassment, and limited career opportunities. Yet, some decide to stay in the face of these difficulties. What factors influence whether LGBT+ individuals ultimately make the decision to leave STEM? To understand these factors, we interviewed LGBT+ individuals who left STEM in some way. Pressure to hide their identities, misalignment between professional and personal values, and factors not directly related to their LGBT+ identity have led to STEM departure. By understanding how these factors are weighed in the decision-making process, we can identify the most important targets for retention.
