Abstract

Teacher shortages have puzzled education stakeholders, with some attributing them to worsened conditions from COVID-19 school shutdowns. However, increased vacancy rates after Virginia's "return to normal" suggest other factors at play. This qualitative study explores the post-pandemic departure of three Virginia teachers from public schools. Analyzed through Mockler’s domains of teacher identity, it examines perceptions of media coverage, public opinion, and support. Findings reveal a negative shift in media and public opinion, resulting in diminished community support. Participants cited lack of administrative support, parental pushback, and political targeting by Governor Youngkin as contributors to toxic work environments. This study provides insights for Virginia policymakers to address teacher attrition and enhance retention strategies.
