Modeling the Occupational Survival of LIS Professionals of Color Through Survival Analysis

Sat, April 26, 1:30 to 3:00pm MDT (1:30 to 3:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 110

Abstract

To elucidate the factors influencing job departure among LIS professionals, this study employs survival analysis with a particular focus on professionals of color. Specifically, the investigation examines the impact of perceived fair treatment and professional development opportunities on retention, while comparing these factors between professionals of color and White colleagues. Findings indicate a significant negative association between perceived fair treatment and turnover among professionals of color, in contrast to a nonsignificant relationship with professional development. Notably, fair treatment demonstrated no significant influence on job departure among White professionals. These results underscore the critical role of fair treatment in retaining LIS professionals of color. The study concludes with a discussion of the implications for equity, diversity, justice, and inclusion within the field.
