Abstract

While the impacts of COVID on the teaching work force are relatively well-documented, less is known about the impact of COVID on teacher education, and in particular student teaching. This study examines the impact of the pandemic on pre-service teachers (as well as beginning teachers) in high-needs, urban schools and asks what challenges student teachers faced in the classroom during the pandemic as well as in the years following the pandemic. This study employs both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods and concludes that the pandemic has affected student teachers’ classroom management skills, student engagement strategies, as well as their ability to build relationships with students, classroom mentors, and the school community.
