Advancing MA Students’ Feedback on Writing Through AI Assistance: An Intervention Study

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of integrating Generative AI (GenAI) into pre-service teachers’ writing feedback through a two-week intervention. The proficiency of participants in providing feedback was evaluated quantitatively through content analysis. The feedback provided by participants was coded based on established frameworks of feedback types and levels. The analysis revealed significant changes in both feedback type and level. Subsequent interviews with the participants attributed these improvements to refined skills in using GenAI and enhanced understandings of writing feedback. The study highlighted the importance of effective prompting and the knowledge of feedback-giving strategies, concluding that while GenAI tools can refine pre-service teachers’ feedback skills, human-AI collaboration is essential for providing effective and reliable feedback.
