Wed, April 23, 10:50am to 12:20pm MDT (10:50am to 12:20pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 702

Abstract

The Open Doors Summer Undergraduate Research Education Program is a collaborative effort between HBCUs and a PWI aimed to support underrepresented students of color from HBCUs by preparing them for graduate research degrees. The pilot program involved a month-long immersive research experience (remote, hybrid, or in-person) where students learned research skills, received mentoring from graduate and faculty mentors, and learn essential skills for graduate school, such as writing a literature review. Pilot versions of programming consisted of mentoring support while students wrote proposed education-related studies and attended seminars on personal statements, resumes, and the graduate application process. The collaboration provided students with valuable academic and personal experiences and created a more diverse and equitable path to success in graduate school.
