Abstract

This study examines students’ immediate experiences and expectations regarding online assessments. A sample of N = 1,324 students at a German university completed a survey on their online assessment experiences immediately after taking a 'bring your own device' (BYOD) exam. Results indicate that students had positive experiences with BYOD online assessments in terms of usability, device suitability, and fairness. Technical problems affected only a small fraction of exams and were mostly resolved effectively. Compared to paper-and-pencil exams, students generally felt equally or less stressed. However, in contrast to findings indicating a positive attitude towards online assessment, only a minority expressed a preference for more online exams in their studies, despite a clear desire for more detailed feedback in future assessments.
