One approach to remedy ineffective educator preparation programs and renew teacher development systems is the design and implementation of research-based grow your own (GYO) programs. This is because research indicates GYO programs can be used to: address teacher shortages; increase ethnoracial, cultural and linguistic diversity in the educator workforce; work to stabilize teacher retention by locally developing teachers; and enhance programs by infusing culturally sustaining pedagogies and local knowledge systems that build on the strengths of teacher candidates (Author, 2019; Garcia, 2020; Valenzuela, 2017). With this in mind, this research paper explores the practices of research-based GYO programs to identify approaches to remedy and repair educator preparation programs that marginalize Teachers of Color and Indigenous Teachers in teacher development systems.
