Give Me One More Chance? Mistake-Making Experiences and Preferences Among College Students in STEM (Poster 38)

Fri, April 25, 8:00 to 9:30am MDT (8:00 to 9:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Exhibit Hall Level, Exhibit Hall F - Poster Session

Abstract

College students arrive on campus many years into a formal academic career. Building on their prior experience, the culture of the post-secondary classrooms also steers their perspectives on learning–including attitudes about mistakes (Leighton et al., 2018). The current interview study delves into student-reported, day-to-day experiences with mistakes for undergraduates in STEM and Humanities majors. The findings highlight the role of relationships with peers and professors, the influence of negative attitudes about mistakes on engagement in courses, and the positive perceptions of opportunities for revision.
