Activist Research in Social Studies Education: Renewed Scholarship for a Better World

Thu, April 24, 8:00 to 9:30am MDT (8:00 to 9:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 702

Abstract

Author one outlines a definition of activist research, explaining how this frame could contribute theoretically, methodologically, and practically. Drawing on Gutierrez and Limpan’s (2016) and Nguyen (2021) ideas about activist research, author one outlines activist research by posing questions that researchers can ask to challenge their work in more activist ways. By exploring examples of activist research, author one builds a framework of possibilities for renewed social studies scholarship that includes (a) building new theoretical knowledge through diverse partnerships, (b) employing diverse research methods in service to activist research, (c) studying up on threats to democracy, and (d) solving practical problems.
