Preparing Ethnic Studies Teachers: Understanding and Meeting the Needs of Both Pre-Service and In-Service Teachers

Sun, April 27, 8:00 to 9:30am MDT (8:00 to 9:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Bluebird Ballroom Room 2F

Abstract

How should ethnic studies (ES) teachers be prepared? What should they understand, and be able to do? What do teachers need to feel prepared to teach ethnic studies in their K-12 classrooms? This session describes how one ES Teacher Education Pathway- has designed two programs to meet the needs of emerging ES teachers- one pathway for preservice teachers- currently in its 10th year of implementation and a second pathway for in-service teachers -currently in its second year of implementation- seeking additional training to teach ethnic studies. This study seeks to elucidate the needs of ethnic studies teachers at both the pre-service and in-service stages of their careers and understand the implications for how teacher preparation programs should be structured and implemented.
