Culturally Sustaining Writing Workshop: Developing Agentic Writers

Fri, April 25, 3:20 to 4:50pm MDT (3:20 to 4:50pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 302

Abstract

The case study examined how a bilingual Latina kindergarten teacher created a culturally sustaining writing workshop that supported her bilingual Latinx students in developing agency as bilingual Latinx writers. Findings reveal that young Latinx kindergarten students can write authentic texts that are guided by their interests and their lived experiences. In addition, when students are invited to draw from their lived experiences, a space is created for teachers and their peers to learn about their varied Funds of Identity in their final products.
