Assessing Equity in Engagement: Measurement Invariance in the National Community College Student Engagement Survey (Poster 37)

Wed, April 23, 2:30 to 4:00pm MDT (2:30 to 4:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Exhibit Hall Level, Exhibit Hall F - Poster Session

Abstract

This study explores the measurement invariance of the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) across gender, race/ethnicity, age, and enrollment intensity. Using the 2017-2019 CCSSE dataset, multiple-group confirmatory factor analysis confirmed consistent interpretations of engagement constructs across these groups. The results indicate that men are generally less engaged than women, neo-traditional students (aged 25+) exhibit higher effort but lower academic engagement, URM students show strong commitment but receive less institutional support, and part-time students engage less due to external commitments. These findings highlight the need for targeted support strategies in community colleges to enhance engagement and success, ensuring equitable educational experiences for all students.
