From Legacy to Innovación: Translating HBCU Servingness Into Actionable Strategies for HSIs

Wed, April 23, 4:20 to 5:50pm MDT (4:20 to 5:50pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 1

Abstract

This roundtable discussion seeks to explore the concept of servingness at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and how these institutions can offer valuable lessons to Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) in fostering inclusive excellence. By building on the longstanding history of HBCUs in serving the Black American community, we will propose a framework for servingness that includes Afro, Afro-Latine, Latine, Afro-Indigenous, and Indigenous identities. This session will discuss the shared histories of oppression among these communities and how HBCUs' practices can be adapted and implemented at HSIs to create more inclusive environments. Participants will engage in an interactive dialogue to develop actionable strategies for HSIs, inspired by the successful models of servingness at HBCUs.
