Abstract

This study developed and validated a multidimensional instrument to assess students' social-emotional competencies (SEC), including a knowledge test and the Students' Social-Emotional Attitude and Skills Questionnaire (SEAS-Q). The SEAS-Q's attitude and skill questionnaires had acceptable psychometric properties, but the knowledge test required optimization. Interestingly, the attitude and skill questionnaires yielded different factor structures, yet both indicated a high relatedness between responsible decision making and relationship skills. The study highlights that effectively assessing SEC should involve knowledge and positive attitudes towards social-emotional learning, in addition to skills. The instruments provide a reliable and valid way to measure students' SEC, informing the design of effective SEL interventions.
