Local School District Experiences of Latinx Student-Parents at a Research Intensive University

Sat, April 26, 8:00 to 9:30am MDT (8:00 to 9:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Bluebird Ballroom Room 3F

Abstract

This community-based project arose from concerns among Latinx students at an emerging HSI about their experiences with the local school district. Among the concerns raised by community members were that their experiences were invisible in the larger narrative surrounding how the local school district serves families. While the research about parenting students on college campuses has found that their experience as parents and students at their institutions of higher education is invisiblized, little is known about their experiences with the local school districts to which they move when attending their respective universities. In with student-parents, this research aims to document the experience of student-parents with children enrolled at a local school district using oral histories.
