Evolving Attitudes Toward the Use of Generative AI Among High School Students in an Inner-City School (Poster 12)

Fri, April 25, 1:30 to 3:00pm MDT (1:30 to 3:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Exhibit Hall Level, Exhibit Hall F - Poster Session

Abstract

This study aims to explore the attitudes towards the use of generative AI among students in an inner-city high school in a mid-western metropolitan district. A classroom teacher presented an introductory session to illustrate how to prompt ChatGPT 3.5 to generate learning content and information. The students (N=45) were then encouraged to experiment with new prompts as the teacher demonstrated the results. Pre and post surveys were administered. Results indicated that overall students developed more concerns about the negative effects of using ChatGPT in academic settings and showed less positive attitudes towards it. Implications for educational practices in the era of generative AI to foster readiness among the students are discussed.
