Women in Labor: Teaching, Mothering, and Intention Among Women Organizers

Fri, April 25, 9:50 to 11:20am MDT (9:50 to 11:20am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 4

Abstract

In this paper, I describe the results of an interview-based study of eight women who are simultaneously teachers, mothers, and organizers. Using a feminist poststructuralist lens, I focus on these subjectivities' areas of tension and coalescence. Specifically, I question the intentionality with which participants describe their paths to teaching, motherhood, and organizing and stress the importance of intentionality when developing new leaders within the ranks of union leadership.
