Abstract

This study examines the relationship between internalized racism and psychological distress among Asian college students, focusing on gender identity and classification differences. Internalized racism, where individuals adopt racist beliefs against their own group, impacts mental health. Prior research predominantly focused on Black individuals, leaving a gap for Asian populations often viewed as a monolith. The study involved 201 Asian American college students completing surveys on internalized racism, depression, anxiety, and social support. Findings show internalized racism significantly predicts depression and anxiety, with Asian men experiencing higher levels than women. This research highlights the need for targeted support for Asian college students, addressing unique stressors and combating internalized racism to improve mental health and overall well-being.
