Building TRUST in Human and Technology-Mediated Assessments

Abstract

Integrating cognitive diagnostic assessment (C-DiagA) and dynamic assessment (DA) can revolutionize teaching and assessment methodologies. C-DiagA quantifies learners’ current skills, while DA realizes their learning potential through dynamic mediation. Advances in technology now allow for natural language processing, real-time data processing, timely feedback, and adaptive support for learners. Integrating mediation in assessment links dynamic interactions among multiple agents, such as self, learner-expert, and human-machine. This study examines mediation processes based on diagnostic feedback in technology-rich learning contexts.
Results indicated that pairing C-DiagA with human and machine mediation significantly benefited L2 students and those with learning disabilities (LD), helping them achieve and maintain skill mastery more effectively than in traditional settings. Mediation enhanced students’ self-efficacy, motivation, and persistence when tackling challenging tasks.
