This research paper explores the connection between IQ testing rooted in eugenics ideologies and educational policies. By employing qualitative research methods, including archival analysis, interviews, and thematic analysis, it seeks to clarify the historical roots of IQ testing, its entanglement with eugenics, and its enduring, lifelong impact on African-American students.
The objectives of this research are threefold: to trace the historical development of IQ testing, to analyze the impact of IQ testing on educational policies and practices, particularly focusing on its role in perpetuating inequities, and to explore alternative approaches to academic assessment that don’t produce racial harm. Ultimately, this study aims to inform policymakers, educators, and stakeholders about the need for critical reflection and reform within educational assessment.
