Abstract

The expansion of K-12 Ethnic Studies, driven by educational stakeholders including students, aims to transform public school curricula into tools for social justice (Cuauhtin et al., 2019). Ethnic Studies plays a crucial role in developing culturally relevant educators, as teacher quality is a key factor in student learning (American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, 2010). Culturally relevant pedagogies help preservice teachers support ethnic minoritized learners through meaningful strategies (Lynn et al., 1999). Research links ethnic studies curricula to improved student engagement, academic achievement, and personal empowerment (Sleeter, 2002, 2011). CREST seeks to increase diversity in teacher preparation programs.
