Pedagogies of Maíz: Living Ancestral Saberes and Cultivating Relational Teaching and Learning Practices

Fri, April 25, 3:20 to 4:50pm MDT (3:20 to 4:50pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 4

Abstract

Centering on Indigenous intellectual traditions that recognize stories as theories, data, and important tools for teaching, I offer stories about what I’ve learned from/with maíz and how maíz shapes my teaching philosophy. I draw from memories and stories of my abuelo, who cultivated in me a desire to remain connected with maíz, our relatives and knowledges from the ancestral territories of the P’urhepecha in Michoacán. I also draw from my experiences and reflections participating in an Coahuiltecan community-led teacher education program in central Texas.
