Re-claiming Brown’s Ignored Promise of Quality Education for Black Children: The Communally-Bonded Schooling Model and Black Public Schools

Thu, April 24, 3:35 to 5:05pm MDT (3:35 to 5:05pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Bluebird Ballroom Room 3G

Abstract

Brown v. Board of Education had two promises: 1. Eradicating legalized segregation, and 2. Creating quality education for Black children (Morris, 2009). Greater scholarly and policy attention has been given to research that focuses on ending segregation, specifically, policies that attempt to “fit” Black children into structurally inequitable and deculturizing educational spaces. I address this scholarly omission by outlining the Communally-Bonded Schooling Model (CBSM), which builds upon the strengths of historic Black public schools during legalized segregation, the intellectual ideas of Black thinkers related to education, and empirically based research.
