Abstract

As we reflect on the 70-year anniversary of Brown v Board of Education ruling, educational disparities remain for Black students. Despite progress that has been made for many Black students, additional progress is needed. Teachers undoubtedly have always played a pivotal role in student learning. In this paper, the author lifts of the role of Black students prior to Brown and examines pedagogies, politics, and practices that were rooted in the teaching and learning. These teacher moves will be investigated to determine if and how they can be replicated in today’s teaching and learning context for Black students.
