Exploring The Experiences of Asian Student Loan Borrowers

Thu, April 24, 1:45 to 3:15pm MDT (1:45 to 3:15pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Mile High Ballroom 2A and 3A

Abstract

Since the Great Recession, policymakers and researchers have been raising the alarm about the rising rates of student loan debt and the racial disparities in student loan borrowing and repayment (Jackson & Williams, 2022; Miller, 2017; Scott-Clayton & Li, 2016). However, no studies have exclusively examined the experiences of Asian student borrowers in the United States. While some studies have included statistics about Asian borrowers in cross-racial analyses of White, Black, and Latinx borrowers, the findings on Asian borrowers are mixed and varied, making it difficult to understand their experiences (Henderson et al., 2022; Tran et al., 2018; Volkwein et al., 1998). This study aims to bring to light the experiences of Asian borrowers through semi-structured interviews with 15 borrowers.
