Abstract

Fear of failure (FF) is often operationalized as psychometric scales, which are context dependent. If researchers are interested in the effects of FF for young adolescents in academic contexts, specific tools need to reflect this context. In this study, an evaluative tool based on Q-methodology will be developed. Through grounded theory, a new conceptualization of FF in academic contexts for adolescents will uncover items that allow them to reflect on their FF via Q-sort. Students deepen their understanding of their FF and educational interventions can be informed by this reflection. Supporting students to overcome their FF in their early high school years can prepare them for possible academic hardships and support their resilience to mental health stressors.
