Instrument Repair in Undergraduate Music Education Curriculum

Sun, April 27, 11:40am to 1:10pm MDT (11:40am to 1:10pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Mile High Ballroom 2A and 3A

Abstract

It is not uncommon for instrumental music teachers to encounter school instruments in disrepair and have neither the time nor funding to take it to a repair shop. Rather than let the instrument sit unused, many teachers will attempt repairs themselves. Yet, how many teachers received formal repair training? While this is a commonly acknowledged issue among band directors, related literature lacks a cohesive analysis of what curricular instrument repair training is offered. This descriptive, cross-sectional study explores what curricular instrument repair preparation exists for undergraduate music education majors. Results may contribute to ongoing curriculum design discussions centered around eliminating the gap between theoretical knowledge and the practical skills necessary for music educators to be successful in the classroom.
