Racial Literacy Professional Development Action Research With Secondary Literacy Teachers

Thu, April 24, 1:45 to 3:15pm MDT (1:45 to 3:15pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Mile High Ballroom 2A and 3A

Abstract

I conducted a qualitative Action Research study to explore how implementing racial literacy influences teachers’ fears in discussing race in their South Texas urban classrooms. The study will examine how racial literacy training prepares teachers to address race-related topics and how teachers perceive their comfort level with discussing race before undergoing such training, including the reasons for these perceptions. This study will also investigate teachers' experiences discussing race in the classroom before receiving racial literacy PD. Teachers will consersate in affinity dyads to discuss questions, that aim to understand the impact of racial literacy on teachers' readiness and comfort in facilitating discussions about race.
