Urban Debate: A Place for Identity Creation, Reciprocal Mentorship, and Belonging

Thu, April 24, 1:45 to 3:15pm MDT (1:45 to 3:15pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Mile High Ballroom 2A and 3A

Abstract

Since 1984, there has been an increase of urban debate programs developing across the country, with thousands participating annually in the National Urban Debate League (NAUDL). Existing literature is focused on quantitative findings that justify the work these programs do in under-resourced communities. Due to this, there is limited scholarship on alumni participation and teacher coaches in this space. This pilot, semi-structured interview study is focused on creating a foundation for further research in the areas of identity creation, reciprocal mentorship and belonging. This scholarship is engaging with a Borderlands and Belonging framework influenced by the work of Pierre Bourdieu, Urie Brofenbrenner, Elisa Abes, and Kate C. Thomas in order to further study the impact of debate.
