Abstract

There is limited research that considers the Puerto Rican diaspora and the extent to which racist and anti-black ideals are perpetuated within the diaspora, particularly within education. In this research, I historicize the colonial relationship between Puerto Rico and the United States and argue how the colonization of Puerto Rico currently influences the mindsets of state-side born Puerto Rican women educators. Through narrative inquiry methodology, I am studying the collective messaging that participants received from their families, communities, schooling, and other external influences and how they are related to the colonization of Puerto Rico and the ways in which those messages manifest within their work as educators.
