Thu, April 24, 1:45 to 3:15pm MDT (1:45 to 3:15pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Mile High Ballroom 2A and 3A

Abstract

Restorative practices are used as an alternative to punitive practices in schools. However, restorative practices are rooted in Eurocentric philosophies (Jenkins, 2006) that often disregard the Black experience here in the United States. After the implementation of restorative practices in schools, Black youth are still three times more likely to be suspended/expelled from school compared to their white counterparts (Leung-Gagné et al., 2022). Black Restorative practices is a conceptual framework that has yet to be considered as a set of practices used to restore Black youth in schools. Using an embedded case study, I exam practices developed by Black teachers to restore Black youths’ relationship with schooling and prevent school leave.
