Filipino Immigrant Parents in New York City: History and Disability

Abstract

Immigrant parents face numerous challenges in navigating special education in the United States including Filipino parents. However, what remains unexplored is how Filipino immigrant parents have advocated and continue to advocate for their children with disabilities in the education spaces. This research aims to understand the immigration history, its influencing forces, and the education and disability experiences of Filipino immigrants to understand parent participation in special education. This research used historical document review and interviews. It utilized content and thematic analysis to map and see what immigration and parent participation of Filipino parents of children with disabilities in New York City looked like.
