Sun, April 27, 11:40am to 1:10pm MDT (11:40am to 1:10pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Mile High Ballroom 2A and 3A

Abstract

This study examines the representation of Indigenous peoples in Bayou Bridges: A K–8 Louisiana Social Studies Curriculum, a new instructional material developed by the Louisiana Department of Education and Core Knowledge Foundation®. Using Tribal Critical Race Theory (TribalCrit) and document analysis, the research explores how the curriculum aligns with Louisiana’s rich Indigenous history and addresses cultural responsiveness. Preliminary findings suggest that while the curriculum includes primary sources and reflects high standards, its portrayal of Native peoples remains rooted in historical narratives, neglecting contemporary issues and sovereignty. This work highlights the need for equitable, decolonized curricula in fostering cultural awareness and justice.
