Abstract

Recently, there have been increased efforts to leverage digital technology in Adult Basic Education (ABE) classrooms. Many recommendations about technology integration are documented, but there are few empirical studies that explore teacher and volunteer tutors’ current experiences integrating digital technologies. This descriptive case study explores how practitioners in a non-formal federally funded ABE program are using and integrating technology tools. Through observation and interviews, a portrait of the experiences, the challenges, and the available resources for various practitioners emerged. Preliminary findings reveal that although technology integration has many potential benefits in ABE, barriers including instructors’ technical proficiency and access to devices are a significant hindrance. This study further defines technology integration in ABE and outlines additional avenues to support practitioners.
